Description:
Dust jacket art, endpapers, and six full-page illustrations by Rockwell Kent. First edition. Billed as "a vivid and moving portrait of negro life today on a plantation along the Savannah River in South Carolina" where the arrival of a visitor from Harlem disrupts the "happy and carefree lives of the colorful and varied personalities with which the old place teems." L. M. Alexander won Dodd, Mead's $10,000 Prize for this first novel, and then never published another word. Octavo. Original red and white polka dot cloth binding, with black titles. With the bookplate of Normena Mackinnon, a notable resident of Topsham, Maine, who at the time of this book's publication was a student at Bowdoin College, George.
Donated by The Book Shop, LLC, Covina, CA.
Condition
Some old evidence of the jacket having once become adhered in spots by moisture to the cloth, with a one-inch tear and related creasing to the top of the front panel; else very good.
