Large Original Watercolor by Joseph Hughes Clayton (1870-1930).Watercolor is signed J. Hughes Clayton lower right). The title is Low Tide at Cemaes Bay, Anglesey. Fishing boats at low tide. In gilt wood frame with gilt mat under non-glare glass.In Frame Measures 29.25x22x1 with image at 21.50x14, Weight 12 Pounds. PROVENANCE: A private collection Manchester, England - Charleston, SC. Joseph Hughes Clayton was a prominent member of the Royal Cambrian Academy in the late 19th century. He worked mainly on the North Wales coast and Anglesey producing sentimental studies of the fishing community particularly at Cemaes Bay where he owned a cottage. Cemaes is a village on the north coast of Anglesey in Wales, sited on Cemaes Bay, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty which is partly owned by the National Trust. It is the most northerly village in Wales. Cemaes is a fishing port and tourist resort, and is known for its beach. It has a sheltered natural harbour that looks north to the Irish Sea and is the site of an ancient settlement. Since the Victorian era the picturesque character of Cemaes and the natural beauty of the island have attracted many artists and tourists. REF: Christies Sale 5915, September 8, 2009, London.
