Continental Neoclassical Walnut and Mahogany Commode, late 18th century, the rectangular double-banded top centered by a circular foliate medallion, above a conforming case fitted with three long drawers, all banded, the lower two centered by a similar foliate medallion, raised on tapering square legs, h. 36", w. 50", d. 22-1/4".

Authentic old piece in good "as found" condition, exhibiting a number of past restorations including veneer repairs, shrinkage, abrasions and wear consistent with age and use. The case exhibits some side-to-side wobble when shaken vigorously. There are some areas of filler to veneer losses, and some scattered losses, most notably losses of about 1/2" x 1" and 3/8" x 1/3" along the front edge of the top. There is a 1/2" loss to the stringing at a corner of the upper drawer. Scattered areas of wavy and bubbled veneer, particularly to the side panels. Locks are present. Pulls likely replaced. The bottom 3" of one front leg has been replaced.
