Description
A very unusual brass lantern with a free blown wheel cut presentation globe. The frame has a rounded top with odd vent holes. It has 6 vertical wires and the horizontal wire is not round. It is hexagonal in shape. The base has a neat feature where you should be able to release the bottom assembly from the skirt. There are two tabs on opposite sides. They are currently frozen and could be softened up with a good soak. The pinch pot has a very round convex shape. The pinch pot is easily removed. The skirt on the bottom assembly has 2 patent dates: FEBY 18th 186x and April 2nd 1867.
The February 18 is probably 1862 with patent #34447 for "lantern guard construction". The April 2, 1867 is one of three things: (a) Air moment, (b) Extended guard wires to to form spring catch for base (Eureka) issues to E. Boorse in Philadelphia and (c) the 3rd choice is Bayonet catch for fount. This is all from Barrett's book on page 330.
The free blown globe was cut with R J Gleason in old English lettering. I think it's "R J". The visible portion of the globe is 5 7/8". The globe has some imperfections (sand dimples) that are impossible to photograph. No damage to the globe at all. The globe does spin in the frame, no plaster was ever used.
There are some loose wires at the joints but it is 100% all there.
