Description
Bronze. China, in the style of the Warring States (475 - 221 BC)
An exceptional vessel with lid in the form of a hu, although here square-angular (fang). Flared foot, bellied four-cornered corpus, pyramid-shaped lid with flattened tip. Particularly striking in appearance are a total of eight abstractly designed, characterful distinctive mythical creatures, also dominating in size. On the corpus are large horned dragons, whose legs stand on the vessel edges. On the lid are birds, presumably phoenix, on the middle of the slanted areas. Rings are attached on two sides, hanging on the noses of the demon-repelling taotie masks. This significantly old vessel has on all four sides an archaic inscription, only partly recognizable due to age-related very strong patina development. å¤ä»£é’銅方壺。 ä¸åœ‹ï¼Œç´„æˆ°åœ‹æ™‚æœŸï¼ˆå…¬å…ƒå‰ 475 - 221)。 高31厘米。 法國傳教士 Évariste Regis Huc舊è—。
HEIGHT 31 CM
From the collection of a French aristocratic family, going back to Évariste Regis Huc (1813 – 1860), one of the most famous explorers of Asia and missionary of the mid 19th cent., see No. 1.
