1st item: Contemporary folk art hippo sewer tile sculpture, painted blue. 10 3/4" H x 23 7/8" L x 7 3/4" W. 20th century. 2nd item: Carl McKenzie (1905 - 1998, KY) carved and painted figural "Dolly Parton" Folk Art cane. 40"L. 20th century. Biography- (Courtesy of http://www.blacksheepart.com/mckenzie.html) : Carl McKenzie was born in Wolfe County Kentucky, and learned to whittle at the age of 10 from his grandfather. Carving was his full time occupation. He brought his early work to the Daniel Boone Trading Post, a tourist stop near Natural Bridge State Park, and soon it was selling so well that he could not keep up with demand. Carl was inspired by Edgar Tolson of the Campton school of Appalachian wood carvers. Carl used white pine or birch for carving and made his own brushes from split twigs. He painted his carvings with thick layers of bright paint applied in polka dots or splotches of red, green, yellow and black. The University of Wisconsin Milwaukee Art Museum held a traveling retrospective of his work in 1994. Other Exhibitions of his work have been held at The Ohio Arts Council's Riffe Gallery and The Kentucky Folk Art Center in Morehead, Kentucky. Provenance - Lexington, Kentucky area collection.
