Description
Roman Empire, ca. 1st century BCE to 3rd century CE. An impressive terra sigillata pottery section depicting two figures, one seated, the other standing with legs crossed at the knee. Bright red, polished potteries called terra sigillata wares were created throughout the Roman Empire from the 1st century BCE to the 3rd century CE, the artform originating in Arezzo, Italy. The term terra sigillata literally means clay impressed with designs. Vessels and plates were initially cast in a mold, while relief patterns and figurative scenes like this one were cast separately and later applied to the vessels. A wonderful example of this early form of pottery, handsomely adorned with finely delineated figures. Lucite stand. Size: piece itself measures 5.75" L x 3" H (14.6 cm x 7.6 cm)
