The painting is in excellent overall condition with barely perceptible signs of age and wear. The image dimensions are 38 x 45.5 cm, the framed dimensions 44 x 52 cm.
Ivo Hauptmann (1886-1973)
Ivo Hauptmann was born in Erkner near Berlin in 1886 as the son of a famous German writer Gerhard Hauptmann. In 1903 he went to Paris to study at the Académie Julian. In 1904 he studied under Lovis Corinth in Berlin and thereafter he went to study at the Academy of Art in Weimar. Betwenn 1909-1912 he went back to Paris to study at the Avadémie Ranson, where he was friends with Rainer Maria Rilke, Paul Signac and Auguste Rodin. After the first world war Hauptmann moved to Hamburg where he was a founding member of the ”Hamburgische Sezession”. From 1955 to 1965 he was a professor at the College of Fine Arts in Hamburg. He died in Hamburg in 1973.
