Description
Print of steel engraving titled „Fille Kalmouk. Famille Tatare“.

Drawn by Demoraine.

Engraved by Taillant.

From „Le Monde Histoire Tous les peuples depuis les temps les plus recules“ by M. E. De Lostalot-Bachoue. Paris. 1859.

The Kalmyk people or Kalmyks are the Oirats in Russia, whose ancestors migrated from Dzungaria in 1607. They created the Kalmyk Khanate in 1630–1724 in Russia's North Caucasus territory. Today they form a majority in the autonomous republic of Kalmykia on the western shore of the Caspian Sea.

The Tatars are a Turkic people living in Asia and Europe. The name "Tatar" first appears in written form on the Kul Tigin monument as Otuz Tatar Bodun ('Thirty Tatar' tribe) CE. 732. Tatars formed one of the five major tribal confederations (khanlig) in the Mongolian plateau in the 12th century.
