Daunian Polychrome Funnel Krater - Raised Hands
Item Details
Description
Magna Graecia, Daunia, ca. 6th to 5th century BCE. A pottery vessel of an unusual form with two handles modeled to resemble upraised hands emerging from the shoulder, all adorned with geometric decoration in hues of black and red. As early as the 6th century BCE, Daunia was an extremely wealthy region as is evidenced by the rich grave goods from the urban centers of Canosa, Arpi, and Salapia among others. Daunian pottery, while somewhat more rustic compared to black glazed and red figure South Italic Greek pottery, is characterized by voluminous rounded forms with geometric and linear patterns in earthen tones as we see in this intriguing example. Size: 8.6" H (21.8 cm)

Provenance: Ex-private collection of Frank Sternberg, Zurich, Switzerland, collected between 1980-1985.
