Item Details
Description
Europe, France, ca. late 17th to early 18th century CE. Four fabulous French majolica tiles decorated with sunny yellow and cobalt blue over white opaque glaze. Together the ensemble creates a lovely stylized foliate design. Majolica was invented in 1851 by Brits Herbert Minton and Leon Arnoux. These men were enamored with the arts of the Italian Renaissance, especially Italian pottery known as maiolica. Inspired by this, the pair created their own version of this refined ceramic process called Majolica, spelled with a j instead of an i. These tiles exemplify the Majolica process. First the earthenware was fired to what is known as the biscuit phase. Then it was covered with an opaque white lead and/or tin glaze. Next, the bright, colorful blue and yellow metal-oxide glazes were applied. Finally, the piece was fired once again to produce a glossy finish that has come to be synonymous with majolica wares. A lovely ensemble of tiles, perfect to frame as a work of art or install as an accent for your interior! Size: Each tile measures 5.5" L x 5.5" W (14 cm x 14 cm).

Provenance: Ex-private M. Reniger collection, Chicago, IL.
