Item Details
Description
Globular Aryballos with Panthers"Medium and technique: fine ceramics with chamois-colour paste; dark-brown and orange paint with strokes of purple and white varnish and some etched details. Size: 10.5 cm high.Description: this wheel-thrown example has disc-shaped mouth with a small groove on top of the flat part, short and narrow truncated conical neck, ribbon-shaped handle vertically running from rim to shoulder, globular body and rounded bottom. This aryballos shows dark brow-painted radial flaps on top of the rim's flat part as well as on the shoulder and at the base of the neck, whilst a sequence of dots is shown on the lip. Over the body, a zoomorphic pattern is framed by two thin parallel brown lines and displays a grazing four-footed animal turned to the left, probably a caprid according to the long horns, which is painted dark brown and purple with some anatomical details of muscles that are white and etched. To the side of this animal there is a bird with long beak, perhaps a swan proceeding leftwards, also painted dark brown and with some white and etched details. The field around the animals is entirely filled with large dots, in the upper part, and flowers painted dark brown, probably for depicting a natural setting. Style and remarks: according to its globular shape and decoration with zoomorphic patterns, namely, grazing caprid and swan, this aryballos can be dated to the sixth century BC.State of preservation: complete.Dating: 6th century BC.References: Bianchi Bandinelli – Paribeni, 1976, L'arte dell'antichità classica, Etruria – Roma, Utet, Torino.
