Description
DESCRIPTION: Lot of eight novels by John Steinbeck, including many first editions, in a variety of bindings. Includes: 1) The Winter of Our Discontent by John Steinbeck. New York: The Viking Press, 1961. First Viking Press Edition. Blue cloth with silver title on spine. In dust jacket. Some fading to the edges of boards. Tanning and slight rubbing to dust jacket, but no tears. Interior is evenly, but lightly tanned and appears to be free of inscriptions. Some foxing to page edges. 2) Travels with Charley by John Steinbeck. New York: The Viking Press, 1962. First Viking Press Edition. White cloth cover with title on spine and decoration on front board. In dust jacket. Dust jacket heavily tanned, especially spine. Staining to rear of dust jacket. Discoloration to front board. Former owner's signature to front flyleaf. Contemporary pencil inscription above Viking seal on following page. Beyond this, interior appears unmarked, is lightly and evenly tanned, and shows no significant foxing. 3) The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. New York: Harper and Brothers, 1951. Red cloth with gilt title to spine. In green and white dust jacket. Rubbing and large tears to dust jacket, portions wanting. Cover itself shows little signs of wear beyond bumping to spine. Prior owner's bookplate to front endpaper. Text sparsely glossed. Pages tanned, but show no significant foxing. 4) Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. New York: Covici, Friede. First edition, second state (corrections to page 9 and 88). Brown cloth cover with title to spine and front board. No dust jacket. Cover heavily soiled. Rear hinge is broken. Small pencil inscription to flyleaf. Otherwise, interior appears unmarked, but is tanned and shows foxing throughout. 5) The Wayward Bus by John Steinbeck. New York: The Viking Press, 1947. First edition, first February 1947 printing. Red cloth cover with gilt title to spine and front board. In illustrated dust jacket. Dust jacket is heavily tanned, shows usual rubbing, and front is detached but present. Cover, however, shows little evidence of wear. Pencil inscriptions to front flyleaf. Beyond this, interior appears unmarked. Tanning to pages, but no apparent foxing. 6) Cannery Row by John Steinbeck. New York: The Viking Press, 1945. First edition, first January 1945 printing. Yellow cloth cover in illustrated dust jacket. Tanning to rear of jacket, small tears and rubbing. No apparent wear to cover beyond shelf bump. Interior shows tanning, but appears free of inscriptions or foxing. 7) The Short Reign of Pippin IV by John Steinbeck. London: Heinemann, 1957. Appears to be a later printing of the first British edition. Blue cloth cover with silver title to spine. In illustrated dust jacket. Jacket is tanned with considerable foxing, especially to spine, but the cover itself shows little sign of wear. Partially-erased pencil inscription to title. Otherwise, interior appears clean with little foxing and light, even tanning. 8) The Moon is Down by John Steinbeck. New York: The Viking Press, 1942. First edition, first March 1942 printing. Blue cloth cover with silver title and decorations to spine. In illustrated dust jacket. Jacket is tanned, with rubbing and tears consistent with use. Cover itself shows discoloration and a shelf bump, but little significant rubbing. Interior is tanned throughout, but has no apparent markings or foxing. MEASUREMENTS: All volumes 8vo.
