Description
Set of (2) Eight-Panel Coromandel Screens, 8 Feet High, Early 20th Century. The first screen is painted a deep red. On the front side it is carved and painted with a scene of a courtyard and building. Noble ladies are gathered in the central building around one woman with ornate hair and dress. Men, women and children surround the building and its courtyard as does a landscape. The scene is bordered by chilong. Below the chilong border, on each panel are household items such as flower pots and vases.
The second screen's front side is carved and painted with a city's courtyard. A ornately dressed man is the central figure. Men, women, and children are present in the scene and are depicted engaged in various activities and celebrations. This scene is also bordered by chilong. Above the scene, in each panel are fan shaped vignettes of landscapes. This screen is brown in color. On the back side of both panels is a landscape scene with a geometric and floral border. Both screens have brass hinges and brass covered feet. Together the two screens represent pastoral life versus city life. Condition: They are in good condition but show signs of wear and age. There are some chips and scratches in the wood. The brass feet show signs of tarnishing. Provenance: From a Virginia Estate. Additional Pictures: High resolution images can be found here:
