Description
Thailand, ca. 1975 CE. This is a small carved piece of coconut shell that has been gilded. On the inside, the carving shows various characters in a four by four grid. On the outside, there is a carved depiction of Rahu. In Hindu tradition, he is the severed head of an asura called Svarbhanu, who swallows the sun or moon, causing eclipses. Size: 2-1/4" H x 2" W (6.4 cm x 5 cm).
