19 x 24 inches: paper
48.3 x 61 cm
16 x 21 inches: image

unframed. Born in Sri Lanka, but primarily raised in England, Julian Lethbridged studied at Winchester College and Cambridge University. Upon graduation, he began a career as a banker, but by 1972 had moved to New York to paint and draw. Lethbridge's abstraction is cerebral, often based on mathematical or natural principles. Methodically building up his surfaces with pigment, he then incises them with repeated patterns. In the late 1980s and early 1990s Lethbridge limited his work to shades of black and white, mining the richness of monochromatic painting.
Julian Lethbridge received the Francis J. Greenburger Award, and his work has been widely exhibited throughout the United States and Europe. It is in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY; Whitney Museum of American Art, NY; Tate Modern, London; Art Institute of Chicago; and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.
