Description
Greek, Gnathian/Apulian, ca. 4th century BCE. This is a small skyphos (drinking cup), decorated in the classic Gnathian style, developed on the Adriatic coast of Apulia, with the application of three specific colors on a coat of black varnish: red, white, and a golden yellow. All but the foot is varnished. One of the most interesting things about these Apulian vases is that the artwork of individual painters can be discerned by their style and the styles they influenced. The decoration on this skyphos includes the "Oxford vine" style, which was pioneered by the artists known as the Compiegne Painter and the Rose Painter. The Gnathian pottery decoration techniques spread rapidly and during the 320s BCE it was exported to places as far afield as Egypt. Size: 4-3/4" in diameter x 3-1/4"H (12 cm x 8.3 cm).
