Description
1st-3rd century AD. A rectangular terracotta brick with retrograde stamped inscription to one face: 'LEG I ITAL' for Legio prima Italica '1st Italic Legion'. 4 kg, 19.5 x 19.5cm (7 3/4 x 7 3/4"). Property of a Surrey collector; acquired in the early 1970s. After the death of Nero and the Year of the Four Emperors (69 AD), a loyal military unit received the name Legio I Italica and fought for General Vitellius at the second Battle of Bedriacu. Vespasian subsequently sent I Italica to the province of Moesia on the Danube, where it remained for at least three centuries.
