A collection of three 16th century, German Bible leaves on laid paper, each leaf double sided and with a total of four woodcut images depicting scenes from the Old Testament, each scene with an elaborate strap work borders interwoven with figures, flowers, insects and fruit. The woodblock illustrate the following: 1.) Virgil Solis (1514 - 1562) image illustrating Numbers 13:23-24 (23 When they reached the Valley of Eshcol, they cut off a branch bearing a single cluster of grapes. Two of them carried it on a pole between them, along with some pomegranates and figs. 24 That place was called the Valley of Eshcol because of the cluster of grapes the Israelites cut off there. ) 2.) The gospel of Luke with woodcut showing Saint Luke at his scriptorium contemplating the crucifixion. Designer’s monogram, “IV†with quill pen shown in the image. 3.) Depiction of God riding through the sky in a Chariot of Fire, initialed in the image. 4.) Annunciation of the Angel Gabriel announcing the birth of Jesus to Mary. Each leaf: 15.25"h x 9.75"w.
