Description
Stylistically unusual Rookwood Standard glaze tri-cornered pitcher with a profile portrait of a Native American male with feathers and shield posed in front of a full moon. Done by Artus Van Briggle in 1889, the pitcher is possibly the earliest Native American portraiture done at Rookwood and very different in theme. Marks include the company logo and date code, shape number 259, impressed S for sage green clay, incised L for light Standard glaze and incised initials of the artist. Height 8 inches. Very faint crazing and minor scratches. Pictured in Ellis and Meyn, "Rookwood and the American Indian Masterpieces of American Art Pottery from the James J. Gardner Collection" on page 73.
