Item Details
Description
Dr. Robert I-San Lin's Collection of Important Chinese Artworks
Of an ancient simplistic shape; with a heavy, dense, and fine-grain white body with trace of greenish tinge, these characteristics being typical of Wanli porcelain bodies; the glaze being fine and smooth to touch, its surface being somewhat mellow and lacking the glassy glare of imitation Wanli porcelains of late Qing - Republic periods; the underglaze bleu being a dull blue and appearing to sink somewhat to the base of the glaze, these being characteristics of most Wanli blue-&-white porcelains; the painting being vigorous, bold, and coarse, with some gentle wash over the rocks to show the highlighted and shadowed areas, a precursor to Kangxi refined washed blue decorations; the foot rim being slightly polished before firing to a gentle curvature, a precursor to Kangxi, Yongzhen, and Qianlong's highly polished curved foot rims; "kiln red" (red patches formed during firing) being conspicuous around the demarcation lines of the glaze and the bare body, typical for most Ming porcelains but almost extinct after early Qing Dynasty; with two "glaze-shrink" dots on the waist, which being filled with kiln red granules, common among Wanli porcelains; with the 6-words reign mark in underglaze blue and in two columns, surrounded by double circles, this mark being typical for Wanli period. It is called "fish basket Jar" because its shape resembles bamboo baskets that fishermen keep caught fish in, with whole basket submerging in the water to keep the fish alive; this shape porcelains becomes common later during Yongzhen and Qianlong reigns.
