Gandharan Schist Fragment - Buddha & Bodhisattva
Gandharan Schist Fragment - Buddha & Bodhisattva
Item Details
Description
Northwest Pakistan, Gandharan, ca. 3rd century CE. A small yet magnificent hand carved Gandharan gray schist stone relief fragment depicting a seated Buddha with an attendant on either side holding fans directed toward the Buddha and a seated Bodhisattva. A rare example of Greco-Buddhist architectural sculpture that demonstrates a strong syncretism between eastern and western traditions. The Buddha assumes the meditation mudra and is seated with attendants beneath a low canopy that is flanked on one side by a vertical column that separates the two seated images, on the left the seated Buddha and on the right a seated Bodhisattva given its hand gesture and lap drapery. A significant fragment from a from an original stone carved relief, perhaps a section of a lower running border. Quite precious for its inclusion of both a Buddha and a Bodhisattva figure! The piece is suspended by two stainless steel posts embedded into a museum-quality acrylic base. Size: Piece itself measures 7" x 14" x 2-1/4" (17.8 x 35.6 x 5.7 cm); 8-1/2" (21.6 cm) high on stand.

This is a fabulous piece of archtectural sculpture, not only for its exquisite Gandharan styling, but also because it includes both a seated Buddha and a seated Bodhisattva. The term Bodhisattva is derived from the word bodhi which means enlightenment, and a Bodhisattva is an enlightened being who foregoes entering paradise in order to assist others to achieve enlightenment or buddhahood. Bodhisattvas are among the most compassionate beings in the universe, devoting themselves to saving the suffering. Traditionally depicted as less austere than Buddhas with graceful postures and elegant garments.
