Item Details
Description
Roman, ca. 3rd century CE. When Alexander the Great conquered Egypt, the Egyptian god Horus was appropriated to become the Greek god Harpocrates (meaning "Horus the child"), who personified the newborn sun every day. This delicately sculpted silver Harpocrates holds a finger to his lips; this is characteristic of nearly all representations of this god. Scholars believe that this is because it is a realization of the heiroglyph for "child". Later Romans came to believe that this figure held his finger to his lips to indicate silence, and so in Roman mystery cults he became the god of silence and secrecy. Size: 1"H x 1/4"W x 1/4"L.
