Original woodcut on paper. Japan, around 1843
In this rare black-white sample print, a bijin (beautiful young woman) stands in the center in dynamic pose, before her across the entire picture width is a hanging fabric panel. The bijin on geta thongs, flowing drawing of her kimono with rare ornament - suzume, sparrows. Fluttering of the head scarf, a butterfly approaches, from above the branch of a tree. Both large script characters directly below the branch mean somemono, lit. “dyed piece “ resp. “dyeing“. On upper right, within the floral framing fujin tewaza kagami, “mirror (kagami) over working of women (fujin)“. Signed right below ICHIYUSAI KUNIYOSHI ga and publisher seal Muratetsu. Good preservation according to age.
