Description
BERNARD BUFFET (FRENCH, 1928-1999) PARISIAN CITYSCAPE PRINT, lithograph or giclee on paper, featuring the Ile de la Cite, Notre Dame, and boats on the Seine, signature and date upper right. Professionally matted and housed under glass in a modern frame. Second half 20th century. 19" x 26" image, 26" x 32 1/2" OA.
Provenance: From an Alexandria, VA private collection.
Catalogue Note: An important French post-war artist, Bernard Buffet (1928-1999) studied at the prestigious Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts before striking out on a solo career. Deeply influenced by the existential philosophy of Sartre and others, Buffet's compositions often project a profound sense of alienation. Ironically, his art struck a chord with the general public, and he eventually became very successful. His somber Parisian cityscapes, such as that depicted in the present lot, are emlematic of his mature style.
