Description
Swiss, late 19th century. A tabletop rectangular eight tune organ box, the case comprising ebonized wood with burled walnut veneer panels trimmed in tulipwood banding, the lid with central mother of pearl inlaid oval trimmed in fruitwood inlaid c-scrolls, mother of pearl spheres and malachite floral motifs, the front with bone keyhole escutcheon, the lid opening to reveal organ mechanism with bank of 7 bells, the verso of lid pinned with illustrated page indicating the eight airs or songs played comprising "Coro d'introduzione" from Bellini's "Norma", "The Guard's Waltz" trad., an air from Weber's "Der Freyschuetz", a mazurka titled "La Fille du Regiment", "Home Sweet Home" by Sinclair, "Toi que l'oiseau" from Rossini's "William Tell", "Duetto" from Verdi's "il Trovatore", and "Romance des fleurs" from Gounod's "Faust", the case sides with patinated bronze handles, overall raised on a molded veneered base with molded curved feet. Apparently unmarked. Approximate height (closed) 15.5", width 28", depth 18". Provenance: From the Estate of Mary L. Haugk, Lawrenceville, Georgia.
Condition
Wooden case is structurally sound with all aesthetic elements intact including all mother of pearl and other inlay. Musical components necessitate repairs. Governor is present but not attached. Seven teeth are missing. Mainspring not in working condition. Missing glass pane on inner cover. Piece overall in original state and does not exhibit later repairs. Wooden case exhibits expansion cracks and veneer lifting. Paint loss is visible at base molding and feet.
