18th Century 32-Wind Point Field Compass in Wood Case

Item Details

Description

32-Point Compass, housed in a wooden case (possibly Mahogany). Meant to be carried on the field or at sea. Simple mechanism restricts the dial from moving then the hinged lid is closed. The lid locks closed with two brass fittings. Compass rose is engrave-printed on paper. Encased under original glass. Inscription in ink inside top. Dark wood finish. Circa late 1700's. Likely English in origin. Measurements: 3" x 3" square (7.6 cm x 7.6 cm) when closed, 0.8" thick (2 cm), 2.2" compass face (55 mm)

Condition

Good/Very Good overall; All original. Still in working order. Minor natural split on the wooden case
