Item Details

Description

This metal mask has the face of a sleeping man who is dreaming. The sculpture has a variety of textures. The areas around the nose, eyes and mouth show evidence of where the metal pieces were fused together. The cheek areas have a pockmarked texture. All these visible marks and joints were added consciously by the artists to create shades, textures and colors on the metal.
Excellent condition. Measures 14" x 12" x 12".
Marian Owczarski (1932-2010) served as Artist-in-Residence at St. Mary's Galleria in Orchard Lake, MI for almost 40 years. Owczarski explained that stainless steel was his chosen medium because "steel represented the future. Plus, the melt temperature of stainless steel is nearly 5000 degrees. Stainless will be around after a nuclear holocaust." Born in Poland, he was the only living member of his family after World War II. He began sculpting in 1945 and emigrated to the US in 1970. His works have been exhibited both nationally and internationally, and reflect heavily on his experiences as a survivor of war and trauma.
