Description
Rare 19th c. Haviland Limoges Chrysanthemums Moustache cup and Saucer and additional Marseille Chrysanthemums Sauce Boat. With underglaze green mark H, that was only used from 1888 to 1896 and decorator mark C used from 1889-1931. In good condition, tiny nick to moustache lip guard. Provenance: A Charleston SC Private Estate. Ref: Book VI of Two Hundred Patterns of Haviland China by Dona Schleiger; In 1840, David Haviland, who had a china shop in New York City, made his first trip to France to establish an alliance with a manufacturer who could create pieces of porcelain for the American trade. He eventually settled in Limoges, France to oversee production. This was near the source of the abundant kaolin mines, the special white clay unique to Limoges porcelain. He established his own company in 1853 to produce china specifically for the American market. There were numerous china manufacturers in Limoges, but the Haviland Company was the first to have artists on site to do the decorating.Cup 4 1/4x4 1/4, Saucer 6 1/2x6 1/2 and Sauce Boat 7 1/2 x4.
