PRIM JUAN: (1814-1870) Count of Reus. Spanish General and Statesman. President of the Ministers Council 1869-70. Assassinated. A.L.S., J. Prim, two pages, 8vo, n.p. [Madrid], Eastern Thursday [14th April 1870], to Austen Henry Layard, in French. On a letter with a blind embossed seal of the Ministry of War at the head, Prim says to his correspondent that `I remember very well the brave defender of Paris, General Williams, and it will be a pleasure to shake his hand. I will be at your disposal the day it will suit you´, and further states `The General will be able to visit the military barracks, I will supply a pass to him, and if he wishes so, one of my aide-de-camp will be honoured to accompany him´. With blank integral leaf. Together with A.L.S., Prim, one page, 8vo, n.p., Wednesday, n.y., to Austen Henry Layard, in French. Prim states in full `My dear friend, the Prince of Hohenzollern father, has withdrawn on behalf of his son the application to the crown of Spain. The story is finished´. With blank integral leaf. Austen Henry Layard (1817-1894) English Archaeologist, Politician and Diplomat. Best known as the excavator of Nimrud and Niniveh and for his discovery of the library of Ashurbanipal. Layard was appointed envoy extraordinary to Madrid in 1869.
Sir William Fenwick Williams (1800-1883) 1st Baronet of Kars. Nova Scotian General. Williams was recently appointed Governor of Gibraltar 1870-76.
Leopold, Prince of Hohenzollern (1835-1905) After the Spanish Revolution of 1868 that overthrew Queen Isabella II Leopold was offered the Spanish Crown by Prim. This offer was supported by the Prussian , but opposed by French Emperor Napoleon III Leopold was forced to decline the offer.
