Description
Rectangular with an irregular hole in the center and supporting three figures along the upper edge. Painted in rust red, dirty white, pale yellow and charcoal grey to black. Two figures sit astride the panel holding another as if preparing to toss him off. A comparable piece described as a "Rare Kongo-Vili drum carrier" was sold at Sothebys NY in Nov. 1999, lot #289.The reverse unpainted with a text in 19th. C. script that reads as follows "John price Esq., Manchester by the sea, Mass, May 1863."Price sometimes referred to as Capt. Price was a teacher who founded a school in Manchester and was elected as a Selectman for the town in 1863.
