Description

Jewish wood carved Torah ark, 1930s
Medium: wood, brass, silk
There are nine steps leading up to the Holy ark. The doors are hinged and function. Inside the silk-lined ark is a (non-kosher) Torah scroll.
The ark is covered by a Magen David silk embroidered curtain. The drawstring to open the curtain is located on the rear. It operates.
The ark is flanked by 6 lights on pillars and 2 on the top. The electricity does work, but these lights do not.
Top of ark: brass Ten Commandments flanked by 2 lions. Behind is a Magen David tube light, which does work.
Dimension: from top of light to bottom: 18.6" ght. X 14.4" wd x 11" dp Condition: good, the electricity works (added at a later date), but not the 8 bulbs
Provenance: During the 1930s & 1940s, due to pogroms, Jews were forced to flee from their villages and homes. Missing their homeland and culture, Jewish artists would recreate something for which they longed - this ark is one such item. It came from an estate on the Lower East Side of New York, NY.
