Leonard Baskin (American, 1922-2000)
Leonard Baskin, from New Brunswick, New Jersey, is a sculptor, illustrator, wood-engraver, prolific printmaker, graphic artist, writer and teacher. During his studies at Yale University of Fine Arts, he founded a fine book publication, the Gehenna Press, which represents an early interested in print materials. For over twenty years, he taught printmaking and sculpture at Smith College in Massachusetts, stimulating the Printmaking movement. His Jewish upbringing manifests itself in certain themes from the Old Testament and a high regard for humanism in his work. Over the decades, he has received numerous grants and awards, and his work is included in several public collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Art Institute of Chicago; and the Boca Raton Museum of Art, Florida, among others.
