American, c. 1840. Both oil on canvas. The painting on the left shows a woman seated wearing a black dress with a lace collar and bonnet. She is Mary Walthall (maiden name) of Petersburg, Virginia. The painting on the right shows a woman seated wearing a black dress with lace collar and bonnet. She is the daughter of Fanny Netherland and Archibald Walthall, sister of Mary Walthall. Both bear the stencil mark of the New York colorman Edward Dechaux on the verso top, inverted, approx. 29 5/8 by 24 5/8 in., 75.4 by 62.6 cm.
