Description
A reversing painted print on glass titled recto THE FRENCH ENTERING VIENNA , early 19th century, 27cm x 37cm, in an ebonized frame N.B. After Britain declared war on France in 1803 ending the Treaty of Amiens, Bonaparte turned his attention to the other allies of the Third Coalition. When Austria moved against Bavaria he marched the army gathered in Boulogne for the invasion of Britain towards Austria. After forcing the surrender of the Austrians under Karl Mack Von Leiberich at Ulm in September/October 1805 Bonaparte was able to enter Vienna unapposed as other Austrian armies were elsewhere engaged . It was shortly after this on 2nd December that he secured his finest victory at Austerlitz in Moravia against a combined Russo-Austrian force which was to force Austria out of the coaltion at the Treaty of Pressburg. This was no doubt some comfort to Bonaparte after the stunning naval defeat suffered at Trafalgar in October ultimately scuppered his invasion plans for Britain.
