Europe, Spain, ca. 18th century. A beautiful reliquary, comprised of silver with bronze bezels, the sides adorned with a floral motif, housing two 18th century engraved images of saints protected with period bubble glass. Such lockets with beautiful religious imagery were devotional items used to inspire Spaniards and Portuguese residing in the New World. While reliquarios are oftentimes underappreciated, they provide us with a window onto a time when religious practice was quite open and public and artists were oftentimes anonymous.
