Western Europe, Spain or Portugal, ca. 19th century CE. An iron parrying dagger with a large curved hand guard that covers half of the hilt. The curved triangular guard is known as a sail guard, due to its billowing shape. A circular pommel connects to a twisted wire grip shielded by the sail, and above are the wide quillions that are at right angles to the blade. The large ricasso has two perforations through that area just before the single edge blade. This was long dagger for parrying with the left hand while the right hand held a longer sword. The large ricasso, and sail guard would catch any thrusts before it cut the hand. A wonderful 19th century dagger created during the 19th century as a revival of a style popular in the 17th century when dueling for honor was customary. Size: 18.5" L x 10.75" W (47 cm x 27.3 cm)
