Description
Southeast Asia, Myanmar / Burma, Shan States, ca. 19th century CE. Carved from a single block of marble, serene statue of a seated Buddha in the 'Vajrasana' posture, with legs crossed and both soles of the feet pointed upwards. The left hand resting palm open on the lap, while the right hand forms the 'Bhumisparsa' mudra, calling the Earth to Witness, gesture, with figures of equal length stretched forward to touch the ground. Incised lines delineate the facial features, outlining of the garment and bottom hem of the robe. Remains of original black pigment atop head. Size: 4-1/2"H.
