100. Ivory and Silver Gilt Cane-1876-Plain turned ivory knob set with a silver gilt medal from the Ottoman Empire, malacca shaft and a horn ferrule. The medal with a beautiful Tughra was struck in Cairo 1293 Hijri which equals 1876 in our Georgian calendar to commemorate begin of the reign of Sultan Abdulhamid II. Be it a retirement gift or a court present to a Western diplomat, this commemorative cane is a token of history and warrants further academic research for exact identification.-A tughra is a calligraphic monogram, seal or signature of a sultan that was affixed to all official documents and correspondence. It was also carved on his seal and stamped on the coins minted during his reign.-H. 1 ½” x ¼”, O.L. 34”-$500-$700
Condition
The ivory Loxodonta Africana in this cane complies with pre-cites and the Endangered Species Act 1973 which are currently the law in the United States. It is our opinion that this cane was made before 1973 and the ivory has not been repaired or altered.
