Description
We are proud to present this next lot a wonderful example of a late 1800's nicely detailed cast iron wood burning toy stove by T. Southard. The main body of the stove has 3 opening doors. Exceptional 4 door (2 side) with baking grate, bread pan, front grated fine box + front ash dump An oval hole at the back of the stove top allows the flue to be inserted. The stove sits on three legs. *** Weight: 22# - Measurements: 13 x 15 x 9 *** There are four circular holes in the stove top that accommodate four hot plates shown in picture 2 *** It is amazing just how much detail was put into each of these toy and sample stoves. Some of the casting is very intricate and delicate. The history of cast iron toy stoves closely follows the history of real stoves. In the 1840's stoves became popular in American kitchen - toy stoves followed suit. Around the 1880's the range cooker stove began to be used and this is when the toy versions started being made too with many examples shown in the book. In the 1920's gas and electric ranges started becoming popular and smaller versions of these were also made.
