The AEAA is exceptionally pleased to present the next signature glass item in the form of a handsome original Tiffany Studios N.Y. dark green Favrile Fabrique ladies boudoir lamp pleated shade. Tiffany Studios Favrile Fabrique (Linenfold) Table Lamp shadesused bands of pressed glass tiles, designed to simulate pleated fabric, and was introduced ca.1910. This is somewhat ironic, as for an artist whom glass was the signature material, and the cause of hisinternational celebrity, made a deliberate effort not to resemble glass! Colors ranged from yellows, gold and amber, to greens, blues and amethyst, in soft matte tones. A lower and upper ruffled frieze, likewise comprised of pressed glass tiles and in a complementary hue, completed the impression that these shades were made of cloth. xxxxxxxxxxx. These shades were impressed TIFFANY STUDIOS NEW YORK 1936, and have an approximate diameter of 9 1/2 inches (24 cm.). Our shade weighs 3# 4 oz., and is in Fair condition with several cracks & chipped panels. All are well held in the tight metal framing. This lamp is pictured on P. #314 of “Louis C. Tiffany, The Garden Museum Collection”; as well as P. #192 of “Tiffany Lamps and Metalware”, by Alastair Duncan. xxxxxxxxxxx. The master of American art glass was born in New York City February 18, 1848, the son of Charles Lewis Tiffany who founded the prestigious New York silver and jewelry firm Tiffany & Co. His fathers company founded in 1837 catered to the wealthy elite, presidents and royalty such as Queen Victoria of England. Louis was a teenager during The Civil War, and in 1866 at the age of 18 he began to study art under American landscape artist George Inness. In his 20’s he traveled widely in Europe and visited Spain, North Africa and the Middle East. There he developed an interest in Islamic architecture and ornament, Romanesque and Moorish art, and Japanese ceramics. Growing up in such a wealthy family had enabled Tiffany to travel in Europe four times between 1865 and 1872. On his return to the United States in 1872, at the age of 24 Tiffany began his first studies in glass and mosaics. Later his experiments with iridescent glass were conducted by exposing molton glass to a series of fumes and metallic oxides, investing the item with lovely colors and brilliant iridescence. The groundbreaking result was realized early in 1892, and was called FAVRILE Glass. It was first shown at the Columbia Worlds Exhibition in 1893, and registered in 1894. In 1887 the Tiffany Glass Company had been established, but is renamed as the Tiffany Glass and Decorating Company in latter 1892, celebrating with the purchase of a building in Corona, Queens, NY, and converting it into a glass furnace to produce Favrile glass.Favrile is derived from the Latin Fabrilis, meaning made by hand, and Tiffany Favrile Glass became the most sought after formula in the 1890s, which featured many fused inclusions, or hand painted surface designs, or simply the virgin glass with gorgeous Irridescence and the distinct Onion Skin finish. Over the next 30 years, Tiffany Studios would produce a myriad of stained glass windows, lamps, glass vessels, candlesticks, and desk sets using this famous Iridescent glass.Tiffany was inspired by Thomas Edison’s new invention the incandescent filament light bulb. He was among the first to create a revolution in home illumination using his colored glass to produce beautiful commercial electric lamps. Effort was made for Tiffany's artistic products to reach all economic levels sometimes at the sacrifice of company profit. He introduced his style and left his mark in the U.S. by redecorating a number of private homes and public spaces. Mark Twain, Cornelius Vanderbilt and, the presidential White House are listed among Tiffany's clients. Most Tiffany lamps were made between 1895 and 1920. Tiffany is best known his Art Nouveau style of free flowing almost sensuous natural forms and designs. Many recognize his glass vases, windows and lamps but he was also involved in interior design, furniture, rugs, ceramics, jewelry, bronze items, painting and photography. Louis Comfort Tiffany was a visionary of Art Nouveau design. His items are prized and treasured both here in America and all over the world. Louis Comfort Tiffany was as skillful a businessman as he was an artist. Prior to being named the first Design Director of his father’s Tiffany & Co. in 1902, he managed a number of interior design firms and decorative art companies. His career spanned over 50 years including tenure with L.C. Tiffany & Associated Artists, the Tiffany Glass Company, Tiffany Studios, Tiffany Furnaces and the L.C. Tiffany Furnaces. He passed in New York on January 17, 1933 at the age of 85.
