Item Details
Description
The following treasures are from the living estate of Ailene & Buddy Ford; noted dealers and lifelong collectors of exceptional antique & vintage heirlooms. The Ford estate presents highly valuable items from a diverse group of genres, 95% + in excellent condition. This exquisite estate has something for every eclectic collector! xxxxxxxxxxx. The AEAA is very pleased to present this great lot of two 1910-1920 German transfer & hand accented portrait plates, including a gorgeous Zeh & Scherzer (Rehau, Bavaria) mother & daughter example, plus a beautiful Ackermann & Fritze (Volkstedt, Thuringia) classical ladies theme, masterfully bordered in deep colors, fine gilt accenting and special maroon diamonds. Both our 9.5 inch Z & S portrait plate, and the 8.25 A & F are in wonderful condition, and each is properly marked, with marks from the 1910s-1920s. xxxxxxxxxxx. The Ackermann & Fritze Company operated in Volkstedt, Thuringia, Germany (which was absorbed by Rudolstadt in 1923), from 1908 to 1951, specializing in historic decorative transfer porcelain and hand painted figurines. Many of the classical portraits were transfers, derived from a number of original paintings by the renowned Angelica Kauffman. One of the A & F standards, was the base tapered blue underglaze Bindenschild, which was primarily used from 1908 to just prior to WW II. In 1951, the company was nationalized, becoming VEB Kunst-und Zierporzellanwerk (VEB Art & decorative Porcelainwork) until closing in 1990. xxxxxxxxxxx. The Zeh, Scherzer & Co. was founded in 1880 at Rehau, Bavaria, Germany, and immediately started to produce a wide range of wares including coffee and tea sets, normal household items and tableware as well as fine decorated porcelain. Items made by the company at a time also caught the eye of the Geo. Borgfeldt & Co. Limoges Exporter, and during January 1907 through May 1908 Zeh, Scherzer & Co. produced a series of items exclusively for the company from New York, based on an agreement between Borgfeldt and Zeh who had met earlier. After becoming a limited company in 1910, the business started to expand gradually as the name of Zeh, Scherzer & Co. established itself on the German market. The design department and the art department had started to work together closely, exchanging ideas and successfully integrating art elements in normal household products, until 1919, when the design department was disbanded. The 1910s is considered the greatest period in company history, resulting in some of the most beautiful porcelain produced by Z & S. In 1924 Zeh & Scherzer expanded with the purchase of the Porzellanfabrik Elster which was located in Mühlhausen in Saxony, maintaining that factory until 1935. The Z & S Company had a high-class reputation and was mentioned in the same breath together with other famous German manufacturers such as Hutschenreuther and Rosenthal.
