Description
FRAMED SAMPLER - Alphabet and Poetry Sampler in silk on fine linen, by Mary Ann Whitworth, Aged 12, 1835. Lower and upper case alphabet and numbers at top, flowering urns, dogs, birds and butterflies at bottom, blossoming vine border. The poem reads "Where'er I take my walks abroad, How many poor I see, What shall I render to my God, For all his gifts to me. Not more than others I deserve, Yet God has given me more, For I have food while others starve, Or beg from door to door. How many children in the street, Half naked I behold, While I am cloth'd from head to feet, And cover'd from the cold. And these favours, day by day, To me above the rest, They let me love thee more than they, And try to serve thee best". In mahogany mitered frame with gilt liner, under glass, OS: 19 1/2" x 15 1/2", SS: 15 1/2" x 11 1/2". Minor staining.
