Description
20th century AD. British propaganda iron copy of the original German design by Karl Goetz of Munich. Obv: the bow of Lusitania showing deck cargo of war goods with KEINE BANN WARE! (No Contraband Goods!) above and DER GROSSDAMPFER LVSITANIA DURCH EIN DEUTSCHES TAVCHBOOT VERSENKT 5 MAY 1915 in five lines below. Rev: a skeleton (representing Death) sells tickets from the Cunard window to passengers with GESCHAET VBER ALLES (Business Above All) above and engraver's initials K G to exergue; in illustrated card box of issue with label to lid interior and folded pamphlet. 85.54 grams total, 55mm diameter. The sinking by the German U-boat U-20 of the liner RMS Lusitania off the coast of Ireland and bound for Liverpool was one of the most notorious events of World War I and helped towards America eventually entering the war; Germany claimed the ship was transporting war material and was thus a legitimate war target; 1,198 people died, with only 761 survivors.
