Description
18th-19th century AD. A hollow-formed bronze vessel in the form of a bull with the legs folded beneath the body; flared base, low rim with flat-section drop handle, domed lid with dimple to the centre. 202 grams, 12.5cm (5"). Property of an Essex collector; acquired in UK, 1980s-2000. Known as Gaumukh Kamandalu, these vessels are used in Hindu rituals to contain sacred Ganges water that is poured over the image of a deity. In this example it is in the shape of Nandi, the sacred bull of Shiva, and was probably used to pour libations over the Linga, or conical stone, that is the primary image of the god in his temples.
