Description
9th-12th century AD. A silver hexagonal-section cell with dentilled edge and hatched ornament, cap and loop above, inset rock crystal with retouched point. 5.33 grams, 27mm (1"). Property of an American collector; acquired 1980-2000. Cf. Korshyn, V.E. Yazcheskye Priveski Drevnei Rusi X-XIV Vekov, volume I, Moscow, 2013, item A.2.01. Across Europe it was a commonly held belief that flint arrowheads were made by elves and fairies. It was believed that the fairies shot them at humans and livestock causing inexplicable diseases and illness. Finding a flint arrowhead was believed to be a sure means to recovery and they were often worn around the neck as an amulet to protect the owner from further attack. Other cures involved soaking the arrowhead in water and giving the patient the water to drink. They were also hung over stables and barns to protect the animals inside.
