John Ogilby. The Entertainment of His Most Excellent Majestie Charles II, in His Passage through the City of London to His Coronation: Containing an exact Accompt of the whole Solemnity; the Triumphal Arches, and Cavalcade, delineated in Sculpture; the Speeches and Impresses illustrated from Antiquity. To These is Added, A Brief Narrative of His Majestie's Solemn Coronation: with His Magnificent Proceeding, and Royal Feast in Westminster-Hall. London: Printed by Tho: Roycroft, and are to be had at the Authors House in Kings-Head Court within Shoe-Lane, 1662. First edition. Large folio (15.8125 x 10.375 inches; 401 x 263 mm.). [4], 165, [1, blank], [2, section title (verso blank)], 167 [i.e., 169]-171, 170-192 pages. Pages 41, 48, 84, and 169 incorrectly numbered 47, 42, and 48, and 167, respectively; numbers 170 and 171 repeated in pagination. Signatures: [pi]2 B-C2 D-Y4 Z3 Aa-Cc4 Dd2. Title-page printed in red and black. Eight double-page engraved plates, all but one by Wenceslaus Hollar; four single-page folding engraved plates by David Loggan; one half-page engraving in the text on Z1v (page 162); and thirty-one engraved vignettes depicting coins and medals, fifteen of which are by Wenceslaus Hollar. The double-page plates are mounted on guards (some possibly renewed), except for the plate between pages 166 and 167 (bound in as facing plates). Without the engraved frontispiece of the royal arms by Wenceslaus Hollar or the engraved portrait of Ogilby found in some copies. Decorative woodcut head-pieces and initials; type ornament head-pieces.
Late seventeenth - or early eighteenth-century mottled calf, neatly rebacked, with portions of the original spine laid down, the lower two compartments renewed to style, and with corners renewed. Spine decoratively panelled in gilt in seven compartments, with red leather label decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt; board edges decoratively tooled in blind. Large neat leather repair on rear cover; smaller leather repair on front cover. Covers with gilt arms of Wadham Wyndham (1662-1736), Stamp 1, see University of Toronto Libraries British Armorial Bindings (http://armorial.library.utoronto.ca/stamps/WYN002_s1). Title browned and soiled, with small portion of lower corner torn away; some additional browning or edge browning; occasional foxing and soiling; a few small stains. Short tear to lower blank margin of E1 (pages 17/18); small rule hole in H4 (pages 47/48), affecting a couple of letters in the last line on the recto. Dampstain to R3 (117/118) and R4 (119/120); a few additional marginal dampstains. A few leaves with a slight horizontal crease.
Several double-page and folding plates with mostly short splits at the fold, a few entering image, but none with loss; the fifth double-page plate of the cavalcade with early repair at upper edge of fold, affecting a few letters of the caption; the folding plates facing page 43, 111, and 139 each have a tear into the image at the fold (no loss); and the folding plate facing page 139 has additionally the upper inner corner strengthened on the verso, repairing a small area of loss (5/8 x 1 3/8 inch) to image. A few double-page plates closely trimmed, affecting the rule border and a tiny bit of the image, and a few have slight browning at the fold (from the mounting glue used?). A very good copy, still handsome inside and out, with good impressions of the plates. Pencil signature on front free endpaper: Anne Forsyth; two pencil signatures or notes erased (one being H[illegible] Forsyth). Several pencil notations on front pastedown.
