Description
Southeast Asia, Nepal, ca. early 20th century CE. A carved representation of Nandi, most likely used to adorn a temple beam bordering a doorway. Nandi is the name for bull, the animal that serves as the mount for the god Shiva and as the gatekeeper for Shiva and Parvati. Hindus regard Nandi as the chief guru of 18 masters or Siddhar. Temples honoring Shiva display stone images of a seated Nandi, usually facing the main shrine. There are also a number of temples dedicated solely to Nandi. Size: 9"L.
