Valdivian Venus Female Figure
Valdivian Venus Female Figure
Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, ca. 3500 BCE to 2000 CE. A fine Valdivian "Venus" female figure features small breasts, indicating it is a female, incised lines for hair, and small impressions for eyes and a nose or mouth. Remnants of the original red slip are present. Valdivian "Venus" figures are among the very earliest Pre-Columbian figures available from the Americas and authentic ones are very rare, in any condition. Includes custom stand. Size: 2-1/2"H without stand; 3"H with stand.

Provenance: Ex-private North Carolina, USA collection. Before that, former New Jersey, US Dealer, Edgar L Owen.

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

#109284
Condition
Ancient loss to both legs, with minor chipping, abrasions and wear overall. Strong remnants of original red pigment remain. There is old collection information on the figure's left side, indicating "Valdivia" as the cultural affiliation and "EC15", which is likely a former collection number. This information in black ink appears to have been written on clear nail polish, which is the proper way to do so since a small swab of acetone on a q-tip should remove it, if desired.
