A shadow box ship diorama. Late 19th century. Depicts the ocean liner ship "SS City of Rome". Carved and painted wood with string rigging, painted backdrop / sky and painted plaster sea and waves. Measures 15.5" high, 22.75" wide, 4.25" deep.
HISTORY NOTE: SS City of Rome, commissioned 1881 was widely regarded as the most beautiful liner to ever cross the Western Ocean. Scrapped 1902.
